This may be old news to those of you who already know these were posted, but for those who don’t, check out the photos from our wedding photographer, Matthew May Photography. Kolina and I saw the blog post on our last day in Bora Bora, where we discovered that the hotel had free wired internet on one computer. Thankfully we found free internet on the last day, otherwise we’d be in front of computers all day and not sitting on the beach. We’re so happy with our photos and can’t wait to see more!

Work on Monday after 2.5 weeks. I hope I remember how to do my job…

It’s less than 30 days until I’m married and wedding planning has taken up the majority of my evenings. One thing that’s also fallen off the radar is trying to take more photos. I feel like I’m a joke of a photographer. I take out my camera only once and awhile and when I do, the photos I take aren’t anything I’m particularly proud of. Maybe I’m too impatient to take a shot and I definitely don’t enjoy post-processing. So, I’m left with a snake, lantern, and pesto for the past few weeks.

Last Friday I reached some sort of milestone – surpassed a quarter-century on this planet and had a nice, relaxing weekend to bring it in. My parents, who were in town to visit an Aunt, were able to meet up for breakfast at Stacks on Friday morning. After another hectic day at work (these are becoming more frequent), Kolina and I made dumplings! She also surprised me with four bottles of Ommegang beer – a very thoughtful gift since I love the beer whenever we go to aziza and hadn’t tried all the varieties.

The dumplings were most delicious and I didn’t take a photo because I was too busy eating! Some friends came over later and we finished an excellent bottle of sake.

Saturday I literally did nothing. I had been wanting to try cooking slow cooked ribs for the longest time (bought the ribs weeks ago, had to freeze them), but it was finally time to give it a shot! A recipe from Smitten Kitchen was my inspiration.

Brown sugar was an immediate tip-off that this would be a hit:

The rub covered the ribs nicely:

From 2011 Random Photos

And then I wrapped them up:

And put them in the oven for 4 hours at 200 degrees. Then I lowered the temperature for another two hours. The result:

From 2011 Random Photos

It was a lot of meat! To be honest, I think I still prefer ribs off a grill but this was a good recipe for a rainy day. The sauce didn’t reduce and get as thick as I would have liked, so breaking out my trust bottle of Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce is always a good option B.

On Sunday my parents and I headed up for lunch at Burma Superstar and then spent the afternoon at the California Academy of Sciences. Despite plethora of small children running around, the academy was spectacular. They’ve really done a fabulous job there – the lighting is great, the exhibits are well thought out, and there’s even a local/organic cafeteria, if you’re into that sort of thing. I was not, since I ate at Burma Superstar. Anyway, some photos:

Evening ended with Kolina’s parents meeting my parent’s for dinner at Chef Chu’s, which is looking to be our rehearsal dinner restaurant. A great weekend! Now if only the weather can get better to go out and bike…

Technically taken in week 51 BUUT I didn’t take many photos this week and I don’t want to have yet another photo backlog when I’m back from Tahoe for New Years. Anyway, this is Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. On the opposite side they make some delicious garlic and olive oil fried shrimp. It’s decadent and a must have if you’re out on this side of the island. They also let you write on their truck! Kolina wrote “Kolina + Reid 12/23/2010 We’re getting married!” I took a photo of that which I’ll upload later. Our message was dangerously close to “Nicole’s divorce party” which came here last November!

I would say that foodwise, the shrimp were okay but they’re not a must have in my book. Plus, going to this side of the island is kind of a trek. On the other hand, being able to write on their truck makes it a popular attraction. When I’m back from Tahoe I have plethora of Yelp reviews to take care of.

I’m a week off on my photo of the week posts, but I have a good reason! I was in Hawaii for the past week and I had a great time. I haven’t had a chance to go through all my pictures yet, but I was excited to upload them when I got back on Tuesday and see how my pictures turned out from a night at the beach in Waikiki. I brought my tripod and asked Kolina to dance around with the LED light on my phone. With a long shutter speed she was able to spell my name! Cheesy, probably, and something that plenty of people do when experimenting with night photography, but I was still happy with how it turned out. Plus, Diamond Head is in the background! Other tourists walking by on the beach were pretty confused with what we were doing. Will be following up shortly with another photo from Hawaii to close out 2010!

Well it’s almost the end of 2010 and I might as well start a new habit that I hope to take into 2011. Kolina had the idea of doing a “photo of the week” since we both of dSLRs and I sadly don’t take as many pictures as I would like. This is particularly troubling since I either take my camera out and shoot photos that I’m not terribly pleased with or I don’t even take it out at all, which is also sad because I spent a lot of money on the camera body and lenses. The idea of the photo of the week would be to force ourselves to shoot with our cameras, edit a photo reasonably well, and post it with some context and background. And if there’s a photo posted every week, I should ideally improve my photography skillz a bit and learn something in the process.

So — no more excuses!

To start things off I have a photo taken at Pacifica Pier. Charlene had organized a trip to go crabbing last week, but it was postponed due to rain. We headed out on Saturday with a lot of enthusiasm – we had caught around 20 crabs last year and thinking of all the crab I would have for dinner was getting me excited. The weather was also gorgeous so what could go wrong? Well, for starters everyone else had the same idea and the pier was filled with people, and everyone was striking out. The crabs were just not biting today – I think we caught a total of 2 crabs in the 3 hours we were there, and they were female crabs we had to throw back. Sad! =(

Nonetheless, I had fun and while the others bought a crab from the local grocery store for dinner, Kolina and I ate at Five Guys :) We also had Ramen Dojo for lunch!

Last Friday I visited Auschwitz. It’s about an one hour from Krakow and the experience was all sorts of adjectives: heartbreaking, somber, depressing, harrowing, tragic. I’ve been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. twice and even all the exhibits, pictures, and words could not prepare me for actually being in one of the concentration camps. Our tour guide was a straight-shooter too, describing the hard labor and random killings that went on only 65 years ago. There were a lot of visitors though, so we listened to his voice through short-range audio devices. If anything, experiencing the camps with so many other people made it feel a little more crowded than I would have liked. Plus, you could take photos anywhere except for a few places. It felt weird for me to take photos in some of the barracks or rooms, so I refrained to mostly outside shots. One room, behind a large glass wall, was filled with human hair. I’ve never seen anything like it. And our guide said we’re probably the last generation to see it.

Birkenau also showed the sheer size of the concentration camp. Acres upon acres of barracks sat on the land and even walking from the entrance to where the gas chamber stood took 10 minutes.
