When Joshua and I were in Mumbai, we were went to Bandra West and wandered into a free concert put on by a band we soon learned were called Mumford and Sons. They were touring parts of India on a trip sponsored by the British Council and the concert itself was free! Their music isn’t something I normally listen to, but it was unique, catchy, and they displayed a fair amount of musical talent. Here’s a video of them playing “The Cave and the Open Sea”. You can even watch it in HD!

Also, check out their Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/mumfordandsons

This was taken with a Nikon D90 camera and with an 18-200mm VR lens. I realized quickly that if you try and zoom while recording, the focus gets completely off. In the future, I might shoot video exclusively with my 50mm lens.

If you haven’t heard of Travis, you should keep reading. It’s the second time I’ve seen them perform live (the first time was at the Fillmore) and they blew me away, having never even heard their music before that concert. So, when Charlene mentioned that they would be in town and was ordering tickets, I jumped on the opportunity. Two days ago, Mark, Charlene, and I took the work shuttle to Berkeley and met up with Ryan. We walked to Top Dog for a cheap and quick dinner and then got some boba at the Asian Ghetto.

Aside: Why do Berkeley people call it the Asian Ghetto? One of the largest restaurants is Italian.

Anyway, the concert was at Zellerbach auditorium in Berkeley and we were really close. 14 rows back, I think:

From Android Pictures

Behind the drummer is a giant gong. It was only used for one song, but it was so worth it. For those not familiar with their music, this is probably their most famous song, “Why Does it Always Rain on me?”

At the end of the concert, the lead singer, Franis, mentioned they won’t be back be in the States for a few years. Everyone in the audience groaned. “But, you can see other bands,” Francis said. “We won’t be jealous. Just don’t see Coldplay.”

Guess what group I’m seeing in two months?

I’ve found a new favorite song, with evidenced provided by my Last.fm history:

I currently know of 3 released versions of the track:

1. Dave Matthews – Some Devil: It’s off Dave’s solo album, so it’s not my favorite because the main reason I like this track so much is how it sounds when performed live.

2. DMB - So Damn Lucky (Live At Nissan Pavilion At Stone Ridge, Bristow, VA): Live Trax 2008 – Off a special release album I got from iTunes for people who went to a concert in 2008. It was the first time I listened to this track.

3. DMB – Live at Mile High Music Festival – Another amazing version, but I think Carter messes up the drum intro in this version a bit. It’s always a bit jarring to hear.

But, I think my favorite version is from their Rothbury 2008 concert, which is conveniently on YouTube. I’ve listened to this countless times at home and work:

I love the guitar hook and Tim Reynold’s solo at the end. Some amazing lyrics too, when you think about it.

Am I the only one who tends to listen to the same song over and over? I never really ‘got’ playlists – I either listen to an entire album straight through or the same song over and over.

When 2009 rolled around, I looked at my calendar and realized I had nothing planned. While I love relaxing and doing nothing, I find that I get bored quickly. So, here’s some things I’m anywhere from 50%-100% committed to doing. Might you join me for any of it? (I’ll start with some stuff in January/February, since I’m not sure I mentioned it).

January 18-31: Well, for the sake of starting off with the beginning of the year, I’ll mention that I did SF’s Dine About Town, going to Sutro’s, Fish and Farm, Ruth Chris’s Steakhouse, and ChouChou. If you’ve never heard of Dine about Town, check it out – great deals on 3 course tasting menus at some top-notch restaurants.

February 1: Snowboarding at Northstar

February 7-9: Las Vegas

February 22: Snowboarding at Northstar

March 7: Snowboarding at Northstar. Going if there’s enough interest.

March 12-16: New York City to visit my sister and her fiance. Still haven’t finalized where I’m eating and what places to visit.

March 18: My birthday, which will consist of going to work, leaving perhaps 15 minutes early as a reward to myself, and eating at Taco Bell & Jack in the Box. It will be glorius!

March 20/21: Wicked at the Orpheum?

March 26-29: Yosemite with my parents. My Dad, who loves Ansel Adams’ works, is going to finally see Yosemite. I’ve told them to get on the treadmill in order to be able to do some light hiking – we’ll see how that goes.

April 7: Travis @ Zellerbach Auditorium in Berkeley

April 19: Killer’s @ San Jose Event Center

April/May: Peru and camping at least twice in Yosemite. I’m hoping to go to Young Lakes and up Half Dome. Definitely not Rancheria Falls.

June 26-28: Boston for my sister’s wedding

July 4th: Something awesome with college buddies. Maybe renting a cabin in Lake Tahoe again, and/or rafting?

July 13: Coldplay @ Shoreline Ampitheater

August 29: Dave Matthews Band is slated to perform somewhere in SF. I am so going, even if it means I’m going by myself =p

Update: After I posted this my Dad calls. “We are thinking about spending two weeks in the Galapagos Islands next February. Interested?” Yes!!

After blogging about not being well-rested for the past few weeks, it’s only appropriate that I went out a bunch this past weekend.

Friday:

- Saw Devotchka at the Fillmore. The acoustics weren’t great, but the band put on quite a show. I always give bands major props for being able to perform live instead of relying heavily on studio mixing and dubbing to sound good. In this picture, an amazingly strong and limber female acrobat spun around a suspended hoop (you can see it on the right side).

Devotchka at the Fillmore

- Hung out a bit at Zeigeist in the Mission. A pretty fun dive-bar. Home at 3AM.

Saturday:

- Went up to Berkeley. Ended up checking out Michel-Schlumberger Wines in Healdsburg. They had a great deal on their 2002 Merlot – $17 for a bottle. I got 2.

- Snacked on some food from Tacubaya and Cheeseboard.

- Ate dinner at Ruth Chris’s Steakhouse in San Francisco. It was my fourth Dine About Town meal for January and probably the best. The 12 oz ribeye was incredible. I brought along the 2002 Michel-Schlumberger Merlot as an excellent complement. Home at midnight.

Sunday:

- Up at 4AM to spend the day snowboarding at Northstar. It was my first time using my recently purchased snowboard gear and wow, it was amazing! It was my second time snowboarding and I’m already pretty good at carving.

My snowboard is to the right of the green one in the center"

The weather was also gorgeous

Whew, tiring weekend.

Jason pointed out that all Rock Band 2 is missing is Rick Astley.

“I would pay for that song,” Jason told me, “twice.”

Ate at a nice Malaysian restaurant before heading off to some kala-ok (karaoke) with coworkers. I hadn’t been since I did some nomihodai (aka all-you-can-drink) debauchery in Tokyo 3 years ago. This time was a bit more tame, but there were a lot of talented people singing. I really wanted to sing Wen Rou by Mayday, but the Chinese music was so unorganized that it took too long to find the song.

So for future reference, Wen Rou is song #208834 at Gamba Karaoke.
