When driving out to Mt. Tamalpais last weekend, I encountered some mis-direction from Google Maps. We were trying to get to Matt Davis Hiking Trail so Google Maps told us to drive on Shoreline Hwy / Hwy 1, take a right on Calle Del Mar, and then a left onto Buena Visa Ave and get to the trail.

When we turned onto Buena Visa Ave we got to Laural Ave but then hit a dead end. The intersection we wanted to turn on didn’t exist! We went to the market next to Calle Del Mar and Shoreline Highway and were pointed to the correct entrance, a left on a supposed one way street where we then parked and went off on our hike. After our hike I went home and submitted a report to the Google Maps team for resolution. Nearly a day later, a response!

What we saw:

On the bottom right of Google Maps I submitted a report and got a response:

\

When I hear back I’ll write another blog post showing an updated version of the map! So cool, I know.

A few weeks ago the company I work for gave out free bike helmets, mostly to emphasize to employees that safety is important when biking, and that riding between buildings even without a helmet isn’t a great idea. So, we all got free helmets! That Friday we gathered at Charleston Park to take a photo together. Thanks to Wysz for taking this one:

Unfortunately, sometime after the group photo and riding home like normal, I started to hear a clicking noise. I looked down and there was a nice fat tack in my front tire. I moved it a bit and started to hear air rushing out. Being the lazy person that I am, I let the tack go back in like it was before and rode slowly home. The tack itself acted as a sealant and I made it back just fine. I then removed the tack and all the air rushed out.

From Biking Photos

Since I had ridden a few thousand miles in my tires and the front was started to develop some holes in it anyway, I jumped for some Continental Gatorskin tires Wilmot recommended to me. The tire feels a lot stronger and sturdier than my original set so my front wheel will be happy for awhile. I still have the original tire on the rear wheel so hopefully it won’t get jealous.

On Tuesday, as part of Googleserve, a group of coworkers headed out to Half Moon Bay to help clear the area of invasive mustard and ice plants. It was a lot more work than I initially anticipated, but the lot of us made a sizeable impact, pulling out a ton of these plants with hoe-matics and our bare hands. The project was organized by Hands on Bay Area and I worked with them over a year ago on a project at the Oakland Zoo. The whole experience made for some fun pictures:

With a sore knee and a great on-campus gym, I decided to sign-up for a monthly pass to attend the daily group exercise classes offerred. Most of the sessions are too early (7-8am) or not what I’m really interested in (bosu boost?), but with some moral support from Jenny, I’ve gone to two yoga sessions. Yup, I’m for reals.

The first time I went last week, I was only 1 of 2 guys, but when I went yesterday, I’m pretty sure there was a 1:1 ratio of men to women in a class of around 30. I’m not saying that my masculinity ever felt threatened, but the ratio at least challenged my assumption that women mainly did yoga. But then again, yoga is listed as #15 on Stuff White People Like. It would probably be #39 on Stuff Asian People Like, right behind tai chi.
