Android Tip – Fix your Predictive Text

This has come up in a few conversations so I might as well put it here, although most of the readers of this blog are power-Android users or still on your iPhones.

But, anyway, here goes.

If you’ve tried to write a message using “predictive text” with your Android phone, you’ve probably come across the phone auto-correcting words that you really wanted to write. Most of this in my experience has been short-hand or slang. For example, when I wanted to write “Haha” it would auto-correct to Hathaway (????) and then fill that in. My phone had no concept of LOL or ZOMG, which are essential parts of my 6th grade level vocabulary.

Luckily, instead of suffering through needless revisions for your texts, you can simply “long-press” the word you meant to type and that will save it to your Android dictionary. And viola, next time you type, it will appear as a predicted word! I couldn’t find a YouTube video of this functionality so if someone is really interested, I could make a quick tutorial. And then I can easily type out:

ZOMG, you need to check out http://trololololololololololo.com/. LOL!

It was a busy weekend – dinner with Kolina’s parents and then poker at Jon’s on Friday. G.I. Joe on Saturday. Santa Cruz on Sunday.

But, the focus of this post is that I bought a grill this weekend. With all the great weather in the Bay Area and no outdoor cooking to show for it, I finally did something about it and purchased a Weber Spirit E-210 from Home Depot. My Dad has grilled with a Weber Genesis for many years, and I thought this would be a good choice for an entry level LP grill that would last me a long time.

Android Cupcake Video

Got my OTA upgrade to Android’s latest operating system, Cupcake, today. There’s some awesome new features packed into the upgrade. A touch-screen keyboard, a niftier startup screen, classier icons, and in my opinion, an overall better UI. But, in my short time of playing on the phone with the new upgrade, the best feature has to be the improvement to the camera. For Android users, one of the biggest pains was the HUGE delay when taking a picture.

Well, all of that is improved – the shutter speed is noticeably faster and you can take photos by pressing the screen (instead of the button on top).

Plus, you can now record video! Check out the video I recorded on the way to lunch today:

All in all, an impressive update. I wonder what their next upgrade will be named. Muffin?
