So, I realized I haven’t been the best about keeping up with my blog – when I decide it is worth writing about something, I usually have to churn out a post, which means copying a bunch of pictures and writing a quick summary of something I did, instead of getting into some more introspective things about my day-to-day.

Anyway, Happy November! I started November off with a ride around Stevens Canyon Road with Wilmot. I’ve been hesitant to bike recently, since long-ride have been hurting my left knee. It’s been a bummer, since biking is supposed to be low impact for your knees and I don’t seem to have a problem running at the gym twice a week. So, with the help of Wilmot, I adjusted my cleats a bit and viola – no knee problems. But, with my luck, after our ride, my hip flexor hurt on my right side. I tried to do a crescent kick to impress Kolina and that hurt like hell – so tons of streches at the gym on Monday helped ease the pain and I seem to be better now. I guess there’s another problem to diagnose before my next ride.

However, I’m not sure when I’ll have time to ride again; I made it a point to try and book up as much time on my calendar for the rest of the year, which, looking forward to it, is making me feel incredibly exhausted. I’ll be doing some random things like crab fishing, seeing Paramore, and the Reduced Shakespeare company, and taking a lot of trips. The grand plan is to load up on cash in Vegas in mid-November, enjoy Thanksgiving with the family in St. Louis, travel around India in December (and do a LOT of work, in case my manager is reading this), layover in Dubai on the way home, and finally spend Xmas with my family in St. Louis once again. After all that, relaxing in a cabin in Tahoe for 5 days will be awesome. It’s going to be really tiring and I’m sure my body will hate me for all of the time changes, but, I love traveling and I have a new Nikon D90 to take with me (and pretend I’m actually good at photography), so it should be a ton of fun. 2009 will be closing on a high note.

I guess since 2009 is sort of booked up for me I’m starting to think of 2010. We’re doing that at work too and I’m begrudgingly using Powerpoint more and more these days. A lot of the initiatives the team I’m on wants to do are being formed right now, which really means I’ll be dictating what I’ll be doing next year. So, it gets me thinking to if I really want to be in the same role/function in the next few months and year. I’ve been only working for 2 years since undergrad, but maybe I need to stop coming home from work everyday and just vegging out, watching movies, and thinking about what to do on the weekend, but start thinking about night classes or studying for one of those advanced degree tests. Maybe I should make a 2010 roadmap for myself. I wonder if people actually do that. Like, if you hired a life coach, would they create a Gantt chart for you? I could really use one – but only to organize fun stuff like travel, biking, and things to cook. Well, I’ll punt on this one and make it a 2010 resolution to decide something career-wise. Time to surf the internet!!!

Oh yeah, almost forgot the point of this post. Here’s our bike route:

View Stevens Canyon Road 11/1/09 in a larger map

Nelson, who is already the king of favicons, deserves a gold medal for his pro-tip on using avatars as a commentor and a webmaster.

For those of you who comment on your favorite (or most despised) blog, head over to Gravatar and sign-up! You can upload an image to the site (and crop it) for use on Gravatar supported sites. Whenever you write a commet, you’ll have a neat avatar next to your name – a sure-fire way to stand out!

For webmasters who use self-hosted WordPress installations 2.5 and higher, Gravatar functionality is built in, so as long as it’s enabled (it is by default), you don’t have to do anything to let your readers take advantage of this feature. If you use any other popular blog hosting platform, the Gravatar Implementor’s Guide can help you out.

(For reference, you can enable/disable Gravatars on your WordPress-enabled blog by going to the Settings > Discussion administration panel. Read this WP doc for more info.)

Now, it’s just a matter of spreading the word and having gravatar-enabled users comment on your site. Click into this post to see what I mean!

(For reference, Nelson should have blogged about this, but he told me he’s too lazy.)

After nearly 10,000 miles of flying in the past 5 days, I’m happy to be back in California. I had a great time with my family in St. Louis to celebrate Thanksgiving and am looking forward to getting back in the groove here. I think I’m over my jet lag but seemed to have caught a small fever while in St. Louis – how ironic – everyone was telling me to be careful about getting sick in India, when it turns out a small trip to St. Louis is what did me in.

I’m giving an advance warning that the content of this blog will become much less riveting now that I’m no longer in India. But then again, I never claimed that what I wrote was interesting.

Let me know if there’s a topic you would like me to write about (or something I should avoid).

I recently fired up my old desktop to get all my photos off my hard drive. Which begs the question – where should I host them? My gut tells me to put them in two places – my site here and on my Picasa account. For one, placing my photos on Picasa can allow me to better share my photos with my friends. But, since there’s a bandwidth issue with Picasa, I’d much rather have better quality photos on my site, where I don’t think I’ll even come close to maxing out.

In the meantime, WordPress 2.6′s photo captioning feature is pretty awesome. Here’s a photo of me taken by Wilmot:

In Tahoe, overlooking Nevada. Note the chips in my CamelBak

Update: Like Wysz, you need to have a theme that can do formatting for captions.

After succesfully importing 3+ years of content (880 posts) from my old Xanga into my this self-hosted WordPress blog, I thought I’d share a few tips about how I did, it since the documentation I had to look through was woefully out of date and somewhat unclear. You should be able to follow all of these steps and not encounter any difficulties what-so-ever. This install was for a WordPress blog running version 2.5.1, making it current as of June 8, 2008.

Archive Your Xanga

Log into your Xanga account and sign-up for a Premium account. It’s only $4 for one month and it’s a nice way to pay-back Xanga for years of free hosting.

Once you’ve activated your Premium account, go to your Archive manager (called Weblog Archives off the Home page). Provided you’ve signed-up for a Premium account, you’ll have the option to create an archive of all your posts. This file takes a day to create.

The next day, log-in to your Xanga account and go to your Archive manager. If your Archive was created, it should look like this:

Click the “archive.zip” file to download it to your hard drive. Unzip it, which will provide you with a series of html pages, one for each month you posted.

Prepare your WordPress blog for importing

Download the Xanga Archive Importer for WordPress at Dan’s Stuff.

Upload the content into your wp-admin/import folder. The file name should be, by default, “xanga.php”

Import Xanga into WordPress

Log-in to your WordPress admin account on your WordPress blog.

Go to Manage -> Import -> Xanga

Now, choose a Xanga file from your computer to import.

Click “Upload File and Import”

You should get a message that each post was imported successfully. You have to do this for each html file, which is slightly annoying if you have a very thorough Xanga.

Luckily, if you import a HTML page that was already imported, you’ll get a message like this:

Once you’ve imported all of the html pages, you can check out your old posts on your blog. Comments are also retained, which is pretty sweet.

If you have any questions about how to do this, or have any problems along the way, please let me know!
