Crabbing – Part Deux

Thanks to Charlene, we went crabbing this past weekend! Pacifica Pier was closed due to really high waves, so we were back to SF Municipal Pier. I was originally hesitant about this, given our last experience, where we caught 4 crabs in 4 hours. But, lo’ and behold, we had gorgeous weather, diving pelicans, and 19 crabs to show for it by the end of the day! A recap:

The key today was more people. We had 6 nets running while we were out at the pier. Kolina had read up on some good bait tips, so she had marinated some chicken legs in tuna. The tuna oil was really pungent and apparently attracts crabs. The nets we used also had exposed caging, so crabs were more attracted to that than a more covered orange bucket like we used last time.

This one was too small, so we had to throw it back =(

One net was doing so well that it also pulled up a fish!

Nemo was later sent back to the ocean.

The weather was also gorgeous and there were a lot of pelicans diving into the water to catch fish. They make good photography subjects to pass the time:

The final count – 19 crabs!

The delicious crabs were consumed with garlic butter and/or vinegar with ginger, plus spaghetti and garlic bread.

So, to recap – get a bait cage that’s exposed and put chicken legs with tuna in it. Cast out multiple nets. And have fun!

a couple more tips: wait for crabby senses to tingle and being impatient pays off, haha.

i also like how right after you mentioned throwing nemo back you showed birds diving after him. =P
