Voter Guide Nov 3, 2009 Santa Clara County, CA

I received my mail in ballot for the November 3rd Santa Clara County election. On my ballot was only one measure:

  • Measure C: Parcel Tax Santa Clara Unified School District

Not knowing too much about the measure, I searched on Google and found that smartvoter.org had a good summary of the measure.

The measure is as follows:

To maintain academic excellence in neighborhood schools, retain qualified, experienced teachers, prepare students for college and careers, maintain small class sizes in kindergarten through third grade and provide after-school tutoring and guidance programs, with no funds for administrator salaries, shall the Santa Clara Unified School District authorize an annual $138 education parcel tax for five years, with mandatory audits, citizen oversight, an exemption for citizens 65 years and older, and funding remaining locally controlled for neighborhood schools?

Education is definitely something I value and there does not seem to be any counter-argument against this measure. It supports small class sizes in K-3rd grade, after school programs, and keeps the funds in the hands of the district. The only way this measure may fail is due to voter apathy and the general concern that people do not want to pay additional money out of their paychecks. So, please, go out and perform your civic duty and support public schools.
