Nice weather, honestly
So here’s a tip about small talk. Whether or not you like doing it, one thing you can always talk about is the weather. When I worked in retail, it was definitely easy to strike up a conversation about the weather. Whether or not (get it??) you really cared about what it looks like outside, you can get a complete stranger talking about the outside conditions, which is an easy springboard for plans for the weekend, hobbies, or whatever else.
Now for a very good reason, the folks that I’ve met here in Dublin LOVE talking about the weather. And I’ll grant them an exception here – for the most part, if rains. A lot. And when it’s not raining, the skies are dark and it’s really windy. So when it’s been sunny and clear skies for multiple days in a row, such as this entire week *crossing fingers for the weekend* you can’t help but talk about how great it is outside. I walked to dinner tonight in jeans and a t-shirt at 7:30PM. I don’t think that’s normal around here. So in essence, I’ve bought into this seeminly trivial conversation point as well and decided to blog about it.
You can anguish together in the miserable rain. You can rejoice together in the warm sunshine. And for better or worse, you can have a similar conversation with a host of people, all day, every day.
so what do they talk about when the weather is miserable?
The weather is not so miserable as they make it out to be. They just love to complain about it.
@nelson – that’s when they need all that beer
