Samurai 710 Japanese Raw Selvage Denim

I picked up a pair of Samurai 710s from a store called Blue in Green in SoHo when I went to New York last week. These are jeans made of Japanese 19oz denim, meaning they’re super-heavy compared to your typical denim and they’re also raw, meaning they’ve never been washed. They’re also hard to find – Blue in Green is the only store in America that carries Samurai denim and since every pair is 36inches in length, they’re tailored to your height. Since they’re unwashed, the jeans will fade and form whiskers and honeycombs based on how you wear them. So, with that in mind, I’ve decided to document the aging process of these jeans. Here are pictures – only 3 days old and stiff as hell when you walk around:

The full view. Notice a lack of any noticeable creases.

Pant leg from the rear. In a few months, these honeycombs will be much more distinct:

If you look carefully (well, in some places they’re everywhere), hipsters will walk around with the pant legs rolled up to show that they’re jeans are selvage, like so:

Of course, you may not be in New York or willing to pay the price for this type of denim. Here are few other options:

  • Self Edge – San Francisco. Holy smokes they have some great denim here. The staff is super nice too. Two friends recently purchased Sling & Stones…they’re gonna look hot!
  • Gap – yup! They have limited edition selvage jeans for $88.
