How much mileage does a 2008 Toyota Prius get?

I wanted to know how much mileage my 2008 Toyota Prius would get, so I used a site I read about called My Mile Marker to input my pump history. Major dork alert: I’ve kept a record of ever visit to the gas station ever since I started driving. My parents ingrained this habit in me, and I suspect this played a small role in my decision to major in history at Stanford.

Anyway, all you have to do is enter in your last visit to the pump, the reading on your odometer, and the price/gallon. The more data points, the better, and you’ll eventually get a nice graph which shows your MPG, total mileage over time, and some estimate costs. My Mile Marker says I’m getting around 45.8 mpg. Woohoo!

Like any data, I should add a disclaimer that I did not record the price/gallon that My Mile Marker requires. Instead, I recorded gallons filled and total cost. I did some simple division to arrive at what I suspected to be the price/gallon for that day, but with gas being filled into the ten-thousandths of a gallon, there was some rounding that might have thrown things off.

Anyway, if you’re interested in increasing gas efficiency over time, consider tracking how often you fill up at the pump as an indicator of your driving habits. My goal is to fill up twice a month, but occasionally I’ve had to fill up more often (this is when my car has gone on long drives to places like Yosemite).

In the future, I plan to take advantage of My Mile Marker’s Twitter functionality. All you have to do is tweet “D mymm [miles] [gal] [price]” and your data will be added to your car.  Sweet!

    that’s neat.
wysz, you won’t see the D tweets. ask beah about direct messages.

Hey Reid, don’t let anyone make fun of you for collecting mileage data, I do it too. I was using a different website (http://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/car/5967.html), though that site has rather limited options. I was pretty strict about doing it, too, until we moved here and my wife started taking my car 99% of the time. Also, my mpg has gone way down since coming to California, I’m not sure why.

Yay! Jason, glad I’m not the only one. I think recording this data gives you a better understanding of your driving habits and hopefully encourages you to think more about how things like quickly starting from a stoplight, coasting, windows vs. a/c, etc affect your mileage.

As for your mileage going down since coming to California – maybe it’s the distance of commute or the traffic around here?

i blame ann for the bad mpg
