Trent Johnson Leaves – Bowlsby to Blame?

“What a FUCKING day” – status message of Landry Fields at 11:12PM, backup guard for the Stanford Men’s basketball team.

If you’ve been living under a rock in terms of Pac-10 sports, I’ll refresh some events for the past few weeks:

- Mike Montgomery, former Stanford men’s basketball coach, is announced the new head coach of UC Berkeley
- Robin and Brook Lopez forego their final two years of college and declare they will enter the NBA draft

And today – Trent Johnson is reported to be headed to LSU.

So again, what a fucking day.

What upsets me about the whole situation is that the initial reports of this debacle indicate that Johnson wanted to stay at Stanford, but Bowlsby, who is Stanford’s Athletic Director, was unwilling to extend Johnson’s contract with the team, apparently due to an interest in getting Mike Montgomery back. But, with Montgomery going to Cal and Johnson not getting an extension, which typically occurs a year before a contract ends (which was this year), there’s seriously not many coaches out there looking for a job. Tony Bennett has announced he’s staying with Washington State, and Travis Ford of UMASS announcing he wasn’t going to take the LSU job. Bowlsby has a lot of explaining to do in the next few weeks – especially with evidence that money is not behind Johnson’s decision to go to LSU. This is very disappointing for Stanford’s basketball program.

I blame you Bowlsby!
