Doug Oliver - Stanford Bball Coach?

As I posted earlier, I was pretty peeved when I heard that Trent Johnson was leaving Stanford for LSU. According to this San Francisco Chronicle article, assistant coach Doug Oliver has been the first candidate to interview for the job. Not bad, considering he was the coach on the floor after Johnson was ejected before halftime in Stanford’s overtime win against Marquette during the NCAA Tournament. But, I also vaguely recall that when Johnson was yelling at the ref and was thrown out, Oliver had his hands to his heads and an “Oh crap!” look on his face, since he knew he had to take over. Good times.

I suppose, given the circumstances, Oliver wouldn’t be a bad choice - he’s in tune with Stanford’s academic/sports culture and obviously knows the program, having worked with Montgomery and Johnson over the years. Plus, and this is taken from his Stanford athletics bio: “Oliver named to the CollegeInsider.com Runway to the Fashion Four list of best-dressed coaches five times while at Idaho State.”

Baller! If you can’t beat ‘em, out dress ‘em.
