Thursday June 29, 2006

I think I’ve thought about my goals for this summer, so here they are:

1) Research my history honors thesis (duh)
2) Try and be a good and available RA (duh)
3) Go mountain biking on a fairly regular basis
4) Conserve money by eating out less and dealing with a crowded Manzanita Dining Hall
5) Keep ACT on my radar screen

I’ve also decided on two possible options for what I want to do after I graduate.  The first is applying for a Fulbright Educational Teaching Assistantship in Taiwan.  Since the program does not require knowledge of English, I’m there!  The second is the JETS program, where you similarly teach English in a part of Japan.  Besides that, I guess I should think about a third option, since the first two are pretty competitive.  I guess that’s another goal as well.

Summer at Stanford has been quite relaxing and I guess I could attribute that to not being too intense about my own research (this could turn out to be a bad thing), but maybe it’s because I’m doing something that I’ve always wanted to do - research on my own terms about what I want to research.  In that way, I’m reading with greater precision and interest.  And reading’s not to hard, really.  At the same time, being an RA has been nice because I’ve met a lot of new people and that’s been great since I’ve lived in the same dorm the past two years.  So all in all, it’s been fun thus far.

I’ve been sort of thinking about the JETS Program as well, and maybe applying for a fellowship, but we’ll see.
