July 27, 2005

Wednesday was crazy day.  With my schedule mapped out for the morning, I was up at 8:45, out of the door at 8:55, into East Asia study library at 9:00, out of there around 9:20 with pictures of newspaper articles I needed for my meeting, to the first floor of Meyer to print the articles I had just taken on my camera, to the A3C to burn a CD and prepare for my meeting at 11.  The meeting went well – yay Professor Chang is impressed with my work.  In addition, I’m going to be starting a new focus – he wants me to look at the works of Lewis M. Terman, one of the pioneers in educational testing.  He wants me to look at the intersection of race and intelligence in conjunctiong with politics.  What Professor Chang has found so far is that in the late 1800′s there were some studies which seemed to indicate that Chinese and Japanese students were “smarter” than whites – a theory which was reversed during moments of anti-Asian sentiment such as fears of a yellow peril or when the U.S. enemy was an Asian country.

I heard Professor Weisberg talk about his work at the law school with Erika concerning mandatory minimum sentencing in jails.  We had World Wraps for lunch, which was pretty good.  I then spent some time preparing for my afternoon meeting with Carolyn.  That also went well and then I was home free for the rest of the day.

Harry, Ken, and Chris met us for dinner.  Harry got 2500 Cardinal dollars for his work on the Stanford dining website, so he treated us to dinner at Manz.  We had an interesting conversation about car crashes at dinner – probably the most amazing story I’ve heard is that one of the girls in my SRC American studies cohort, who is going to be a senior next year, was coming back from her honeymoon with her husband (also going to be a senior), when they got in a car crash.  The husband pulled her out of the window of the car and 15 seconds later, the car exploded!  Man…

So around 8:50pm, I decided to see if the library had 24.  I’ve been checking to see if the library has had this DVD set for the entire summer, and lo and behold – it’s THERE.  But, the library closes in 10 minutes.  And media microtext closes in 5 minutes!  So, I bike there as fast as I can, throw my bike on the ground outside, run in, and GET IT.  I now have 24 season three discs 1-4.  Jenny and I proceeded to watch 4 hours of 24.  So good.  That made my night.
