January 26, 2004

Gosh, it’s really tough to wake up these days.  But, I made it to Spanish, then Asian-American history, and then IHUM lecture.  I slept after lunch to rest up for IHUM section.  Then, I called Andrea and we talked on the phone before jazz history.  We listened to Scott Joplin today, which was cool.  After that I didn’t do much.  For some reason I was insanely tired, so I slept for 30 minutes this afternoon, worked and read, then took another nap after dinner.

Dinner itself was really cool.  Dr. Dement came to our dorm to speak.  He was a former TF for Cedro, and did some groundbreaking research on sleep using Cedro residents and monitoring their sleep patterns.  He talked to us about sleep and taught us about “sleep debt” and how to sleep healthily.  It was a very intersting talk, and made me reexamine my sleep patterns.  Basically, people are supposed to sleep around 8 hours a night, and if they don’t, sleep debt builds up, until you get to a point where you have to sleep a lot to deplete your sleep debt.  So, since I’ve been sleeping somewhat well, I guess I’m doing alright.  Although, I do have trouble getting up, so that could mean I need to get more sleep.  But, Dr. Dement also said that you should go to sleep when you’re tired, and if you fall almost immedietely asleep, you also have sleep problems.  What was really cool was that he showed us videos of dogs and humans with narcolepsy, and they would be doing random activities, and then just fall over.  Kind of crazy!

After that I worked out.  That felt pretty good, and it made me feel more energized.  I finished reading “Captain’s Daughter” by Pushkin and did my spanish homework.  So, a day of work and a very very interesting talk on sleep.
